1st Place: Free-day admission plus two field trips ($175 value)

    Deb Lautermilch, Van Buren Elementary

“My 4th grade students especially enjoy the videos available on Ohio as America. They enjoy hearing the experts talk about their fields. The videos of places such as Ripley, OH have piqued our interests and make all of us wish we lived closer and could take a field trip to see these places in person. I know that some of my students have talked about taking family vacations to see various places and especially to see the Ohio History Connection Museum artifacts that are also found in our textbook. Thanks for being an invaluable resource!”

2nd Place: Free two-day admission plus one field trip ($150 value)

    Jill Briem, Wapakoneta Elementary School

“My class really enjoyed playing the Trade Off game from Unit 2 Activity 5.5. The hardest part for them was figuring out ways that they could communicate with the other students without talking. One student thought she could just lip read what the other one was saying, but I reminded them that all these Prehistoric Native American cultures spoke different languages, so she wouldn't be able to lip read. Another student thought he could write down what he wanted to trade, but I reminded them that there was no written language. When they started to trade, they did a great job of communicating what they wanted to trade without speaking. Some students weren't able to make a trade (including me, which they thought was funny!), and we talked about how frustrating it would have been for the native Americans to travel long distances and not be able to trade. This was a terrific lesson, and they wanted to play again. I still wasn't able to make a trade!”

    3rd Place: Free two-day admission ($125 value)

    Stephanie Lester, Pointview Elementary

“Since beginning Ohio as America, my students are more engaged than ever in our Social Studies lessons. They are making connections and relating the lessons. They have been asking great questions and love the activities. Everything is teacher friendly to prepare and extremely engaging for students!”
